Four Doric one-act plays
Bertie, Bryce and Harry
Three one-act plays, based on short stories by David Toulmin. Charles Barron was inspired to write them as a follow-up to his very successful full-length play, Toulmin, based on the life and works of the famous Aberdeenshire writer. They were performed in early 2006 by Fleeman Productions in four rural venues, village halls in Toulmin’s own home territory: - Longside, New Deer, Udny Green and the Dalrymple Centre, Fraserburgh.
Bertie Mutch, based on Mutch of the Puddockstyle!, tells of how Bertie Mutch, the farmer, falls in love at first sight with the lovely Joyce Allardyce, the minister’s daughter. But his happiness is short-lived.
Bryce Holt, based on Cap in the Wind, sees innocent young Davy nearly deprived of life and wife by the charming but heartless Bryce Holt.
Harry Hernie, based on Hardwood, explores the mysterious disappearance of elderly Harry and the reactions of Wattie and Bannie, his twin off-spring.
Effie
Later in 2006, Fleeman Productions commissioned a fourth one-act play and coupled it with Charles Barron’s one-woman play, Evie.
Effie is the central character in Toulmin’s short story, Dark Encounter, a black comedy of seduction, birth and death.
