Beneath the Crown
Beneath the Crown celebrates the five centuries of the University’s history in seven scenes, ranging in style from high comedy to bitter tragedy.

It was originally performed in 1995 to mark the 500th anniversary of the founding of the University.

The play begins in War, the uncouth and bloody civil strife of 16th century Scotland which led Bishop Elphinstone to establish a university in the hope that it would counteract the brutality by bringing civilisation and culture to the savage Scots. It ends, too, in War, as King’s College is threatened by German bombs during the Second World War, but there is an opportunity to look ahead in hope and confidence to the next 500 years ago. The play has been deliberately designed to involve a very large cast. There are over 100 parts ranging in age from 12 to 80.
